Lookin at the Finish Line

Even though not too many people may know about this guy, the world is about to. A lot of people claim that rap is dying, that there aren’t actually any dedicated artists out there that care. People are right when they say that most of rap is losing the art, because it is. A lot of rappers these days are distracted by the rap “lifestyle” than the art aspect of the profession. However, there a few artists out there who I can actually listen to and appreciate the work they put into their albums. Chance is now on that list.

As I do with most artists, before I listen to any of their songs individually I like to listen to their entire album all the way through. After doing this with “Coloring Book”, Chance’s latest release, I had a few things to note. Chance really does know how to mix those vocals and instrumentals. He seems to use a lot of religious chorales with funky instrumentals and then bombarded the album with horrible grungy songs like “mixtape”. I honestly loved the opening song “All We Got” and a few others on the album, but some others were just painful to listen to. I feel like it was similar to Kanye’s “Life of Pablo” album. Probably because Chance has been working so closely with him…but maybe not.

I am excited for what Chance has to bring to the game, he seems to have a lot of potential. He has a lot of work to do, however, not in the sense to get to the top but to be able to save rap. The world needs more rappers like Chance who can appreciate the music.
